Where Connor and JT Go Uncategorized Greenland Apple & Berry Crumble

Greenland Apple & Berry Crumble

This year we are participating in a geography club once a month. Last month’s region was North America and the boys chose Greenland for their country. One of the things we have to do is bring a dish from our chosen country.

It ended up being fairly difficult to find a recipe from Greenland we could use. There are a lot of ingredients that we just don’t have here. Finally we just decided to make an apple and berry crumble. When we first started reading about the food on Greenland.com it mentioned looking at the apple and berry with crisp topping recipe for dessert. I couldn’t find the recipe on the website but at one point they must have had it on there because I came across a blog that had it and linked back to the recipe from that website but it’s not longer there. When it came time to actually make our dish I couldn’t find that same blog but I did come across two other versions and I used both of them to make our Greenland Apple & Berry Crumble.

I’m going to write up the recipe here the way I made it but you can find the original two recipes I adapted this from at Just Food Now and International Vegetarian.

When I first read about this recipe I read that it was made using crowberries. We don’t have crowberries here and neither of the recipes I actually based this off of menioned them but if you happen to live in area where you have these I’m pretty sure that the first recipe I read (that I couldn’t find) was made with 3.5 oz blueberries and 3.5 oz of crowberries.

Now onto my adapted recipe:

Ingredients:
3 Granny Smith Apples
1 6oz carton of blueberries
1/2 cup of sugar
2 tbsp butter (cut into pieces)
10 tbsp melted butter
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 cup flour
3/4 cup rolled oats

First preheat the oven to 390°F. Then chop the apples and put them in a baking dish along with the blueberries.

Here were my apples. They were actually fairly large...I'm not sure if you can tell.

I actually used a little less than 1/2 cup of sugar but it's just easier to write as 1/2 cup for the ingredient list.

Pour your sugar over the apples and blueberries and mix them to coat. This will look like a lot of sugar. I thought it looked pretty though. The apples looked crystallized.

Next you just take your pieces of butter and put them all over your apple/blueberry mixture.

Next combine your brown sugar (again I actually used a little less than 1/2 cup), flour, and oats. Then mix in the melted butter.

The last thing you need to do is spread your oat mixture over the apples and berries and bake it in the oven for 30 minutes.

Ready to go in the oven.

This recipe is really simple and quick to put together and it got really good reviews. It’s not too sweet at all. In fact, the fruit is tart so it balances really well with the sweetness from the topping. All the moms loved it. I’m not sure about the kids. I didn’t really hear what they thought about any of the food but I do know that Connor loved it. He ate most of the leftover portion that we brought home and wanted to make more.

Enjoy!
