Where Connor and JT Go Art/Crafts/Activities/Learning Bear Says Thanks

Bear Says Thanks

November’s author for the Virtual Book Club for Kids was Karma Wilson. The book we read was Bear Says Thanks. I figured being November this book would be perfect.

For some reason I had trouble figure out what activity we should do for this book. I thought of a couple of different things but wasn’t really happy with any of them and I finally settled on making a Bear Says Thanks lapbook. We just made it really simple, with just one file folder as is.

We started by making a quilt out of foam. I let JT pick which two colors of foam he wanted and cut one into a square and cut the other into strips. I cut slits into the square piece and JT weaved the strips through to make it look like a quilt.

When he was done he taped it to the inside of the folder. After that he wanted to use the foam to make muffins and trash cans for bear so he cut out muffin tops and bottoms and taped them together. He said they were going to be all different shapes. He also cut out shapes for trash cans and then he taped everything down on the same side as the quilt.

While he was finishing that up I cut out 6 squares of paper. Then we talked about which animals brought what and in what order. Once we had it figured out we looked up what kind of paw print each animal makes and I drew it on the square along with a picture of what they brought. We also wrote the animal and the name of the item. JT wrote the first letters only and then he colored the prints and food. For the birds and gopher and mole we just picked one print to draw on the square.

Then we glued them down in order into the lapbook. We actually switched the birds and Gopher and Mole, so it’s wrong in the picture but we fixed it. Underneath all of the animals I traced JT’s hand. He wanted it traced directly on the file folder and then he told me things he was thankful for and I wrote them all down in his hand.

The last thing we did was print out a coloring sheet. It was actually for Bear Snores On but it still works. Once he was done coloring it we cut it out and he glued them on the front and I wrote Bear Says Thanks at the top.

Even though it’s already December we’re still working on Connor’s November book. Connor is reading Half Upon a Time by James Riley and we are making a board game to go with the book. Expect it to be up at the end of next week maybe.
